[Review] Benromach 40 years old (2022 Release) 57.6%

Today, I bring you something special: the second annual release of the Benromach 40-year-old single malt.

This is an annual release of just over 1,000 bottles, and the first one was awarded ‘Best in Show’ at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

As I mentioned in previous posts, I am a big fan of Benromach releases and having the opportunity to try their 40-year-old is an absolute privilege! So, let’s pour it and savour every drop…

The whisky was matured for 40 years in the finest sherry casks. It is dark amber and natural in colour, non-chill filtered and bottled at the cask strength of 57.6% ABV.

My tasting notes:

Oak and citrus, with orange, old bookcase and oak spice. It is fruity too with some ripe yellow peach, honey, apple and cinnamon compote, mango, dried fruits, raisins and a drop of lime. There is also a gentle earthiness and slight smoke, tobacco leaves / cigar, vanilla, hints of walnut, ginger and wood polish. Even at 57.6%, the alcohol is very well integrated. Wow…!

Warming, full of mature oak, leather armchair and cigar notes. A lot of dark fruit too with some black cherries and spicy plum jam. Dark chocolate, almond and walnut, caramel, ginger and bitter orange. There is also some heather and hints of sweet rubber. Definitely a dram to get lost in, stunning!

Oaky and nutty, warming, quite drying, bitter orange, black tea, cinnamon, hints of cold bonfire, dried fruit and dark chocolate again. Long and lingering, a quality dram for sure.

With water:

The nose is more fragrant and fresher with more citrus and some dried barley. The palate is creamier with some spicy malty chocolate and milky coffee. The finish gains in mature oak and walnut with some hints of espresso coffee.

What an experience! Many people mentioned how delicious the 1st release was, so this 2nd release had a lot to live up to and trust me it does not disappoint. It is an absolute treat for your senses. I guess there was one disappointing moment for me: when I realised my glass was empty!

Benromach 40 Years Old is priced at £2,000, and available from www.benromach.com

Sláinte all!

Thanks you to Benromach for sending me such a treat!
